Ready…..Set… Go…. Saturday, June 26, 2016 marks the date for the Horses Healing Heroes 5K fun run, and families who live in a Monroe property can get in on the action. Beginning at 10 a.m. at Lake Tye Park participants can run, jog or even walk the route. Bystanders are part of the cheering squad encouraging participants along the way. Take part in honoring veterans and active military personnel as they team up and run in support of their fellow brothers and sisters. American heroes residing near or on a Monroe property have dedicated themselves to serving the United States and participating in the Horses Healing Heroes 5k is a great way to say Thanks.

Horses Healing Heroes provides a safe space for men and women who have served our country. At their farm, soldiers may relax and heal in mind and spirit. Often animals provide a comfort that exceeds the bonds between humans, and the horses here help to ease the anguish caused by PTSD and other ailments.

Children of all ages are welcome to partake in the 5K, and those eight years and under can do so at no charge. Don’t leave the dog sitting all alone at your Monroe home, as pets are welcome too. Kids from Lake Stevens homes have lots of opportunities to hone their sports skills this summer. Sign up to play softball on Monday and Tuesday, June 20th and 21st. Kids in grades three to eight will work with Lake Stevens High School coaches and players to practice hitting, base running, and defensive strategy. Camp runs from 10 a.m. to noon both days. Boys entering grades three to eight who love basketball can sign up for a camp session from Monday, June 20th to Thursday, June 23rd. Participants will work on drills and scrimmage games. Camp begins at 9:30 and ends at 11 a.m. The fee for both camps is $50 and includes a t-shirt.

Kids from Lake Stevens Homes Can Stay Fit This Summer

Practice several sports at Sports and Wellness Camp, designed for kids entering grades one to five. Kids from Lake Stevens homes will be able to practice soccer, volleyball, flag football, orienteering, and more. There are two sessions for this camp. Attend Monday through Thursday, either June 20th to 23rd or June 27th to 30th. Both sessions begin at 9 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Campers should bring lunch, and a snack will be provided. The camp fee is $90 per student, with a $5 discount for additional siblings.

Alderleaf Wilderness College offers those who live in Monroe and the surrounding area the chance to learn more about nature and wilderness survival. Choose from such courses as wilderness survival, wild and edible medicinal plants, permaculture and sustainable living skills, wildlife tracking, and outdoor leadership. Thanks to experienced instructors, all participants leave with extremely useful skills that pertain to the natural world. All who live in Monroe are lucky to be able to take advantage of the many offerings of this facility. One day classes and workshops are available as well as weekend, week-long, and extended programs.

Summertime is here, and that means fun in the sun and the water. In order to encourage all Lake Stevens real estate owners to have a safe summer, the city is hosting its 11th Annual Health and Safety Fair. Take advantage of free health screenings to identify problems early. Bring expired medications so they can be disposed of properly. Get recycling tips and disaster preparedness information. Lake Stevens Fire Department and Police Department will both be giving safety lessons at the fair. Brush up on water safety, pet safety in the heat, first aid and CPR. Kids will be able to test their fire safety knowledge in the Fire Safety House. They can get to know the firefighters and police officers who keep them safe. There will also be a bounce house and games to play.

Fathers and daughters can enjoy a magical evening away from their Monroe home at the 4th Annual Daddy Daughter Dance. This event takes place on Saturday, June 11th, 2016 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Get all gussied up in princess gowns and suits and come on out to the Monroe Boys and Girls Club, located at 261 Sky River Parkway. The cost is $25 per couple and $5 for each additional daughter. Fathers, father figures, and daughters of all ages are welcome.

Come for special story times and hands-on activities. The theme for this year’s Explore Summer reading challenge is the Olympics. Start with a goal of 10 hours of reading time to get to the bronze level and earn a free book. Keep going for another 25 hours to reach the silver level and have a chance to win a drawing for a $50 gift certificate for books. Kids who read a total of 50 hours over the summer will be gold medalists and earn another free book.
