For anyone who likes a good spook near Halloween, come out to experience Carleton’s Farm Frights. Four attractions are available. Come for one or try them all. Shoot zombies with glowing paintballs while riding on a wagon and then run back to the barn while being chased by the zombies. Tickets for Zombie Paintball Frenzy must be bought in advance for a specific time slot. The other attractions include Haunted Swamp, Zombie Farm, and the no-scare Dark Maze for those who prefer to enjoy the night spook free. Group discounts are available. If you come with a group, consider reserving a fire pit to stay warm, have a home base, and have a fun time together between attractions. Everyone living in Monroe is invited to the Monroe Community Senior Center. On Friday, October 12th, they’ll be hosting their annual Beer, Brats, and Bingo fundraiser. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids. Ticket prices include a delicious bratwurst dinner and playing bingo. Compete to win both cash and great prizes. Make sure to designate a driver, so you can order a beer, glass of wine, or a margarita or two. The cost of drinks is is extra. All proceeds go to support the senior center’s programs. 

Even if you can’t get to the Beer, Brats, and Bingo fundraiser, you can still support the senior center. They have a carefully curated thrift store called Fabulous Finds Thrift Store. Find vintage jewelry, crocheted items, toys, and many more great items. You can also donate to the thrift shop to help the center as well. Another way to keep the senior center going is to volunteer, either in the kitchen, at the front desk, or to enter data once a week.

The senior center has a daily and weekly schedule of events to help seniors and people who are disabled and living in Monroe. Get a ride on the Mobility Lifeline on Monday, Thursday, and Friday. It runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will take you anywhere you need to go in Monroe--go grocery shopping, to the doctor, or run other errands.

Head to the senior center for lunch, served noon to 12:25 p.m. Monday through Friday. Suggested donation is $3 for those over 60 and $7.50 for those under 60. There’s a fundraising lunch each Wednesday, and the cost then is $4. There are also craft and hobby groups, games, fitness classes, and music lessons offered throughout the week. The Lake Stevens School District offers many opportunities for community education to those who call Stevens home. The Fall 2018 options are now available. Here are a few to consider.

Work on your endurance and basketball skills by signing up for Over 18 Co-ed Adult Basketball with Micah Stevens. Have a great time playing full court games at LSMS Main Gym on Thursdays from October 18th to December 20th from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. There will be no class on November 22nd. The class fee is $25 and no drop ins will be allowed. Be sure to sign up soon as there are only 25 total spots available.

Anyone with a canine companion at their Lake Stevens home can consider signing up for Basic Dog Obedience with Kim Dailey. Whether you have a puppy (that is four months or older) or an older dog, this could be a good class if you need a place to start. Participants will work on basic commands such as sit, stay, lay down, and more. Be sure that your pup is up to date on all shots before signing up for the class. The teacher also has the right to ask any aggressive or disruptive dogs to leave the class. The class will take place in the LSMS Auxiliary Gym from 6 to 7 p.m. and the fee is $75. Choose from Mondays from October 29th through December 12th (no class on November 12th) or Tuesdays from October 23rd to December 4th (no class on October 30th).

Any children in grades K-5 who are interested in cheer or dance are invited to consider taking part in the Jr. Vikings Football Cheer Clinic. Participants will learn cheer and dance skills during a two day clinic at the LSHS Main Gym on Tuesday, October 2nd, and Thursday, October 4th from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The group will then perform during halftime at the LSHS Football game on October 5th. Anyone participating in the clinic will receive pom-poms and a sweatshirt, which will need to be brought to the game. Participants will be able to get into the game for free, but anyone else attending will need to pay the admission fee. The class fee is $80, and there are 80 spots available.

Classic car enthusiasts that live in Snohomish are in for a treat the end of September. The 2018 Snohomish Classic Car and Hot Rod Display is coming to downtown Snohomish on September 30th. Come on down to take a look at the colorful and beautifully restored classics from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Expect to be able to see around 500 vehicles lining the street. This event brings between 10,000 and 15,000 spectators every year, which is a huge boost to the economy of downtown Snohomish. Grab some lunch or do a little shopping while checking out the vehicles. The cars and trucks will be judged in 25 categories by participants and the public will get to have their say in the winner of People’s Choice and several other fun categories.

Anyone who would like to show off their classic car can register to take part in the event. Those who pre-register can pay a reduced fee of $20 and the chance to park their car at 6:30 a.m. on the day of the event. Anyone who registers on the day of the event will have to pay $25 and not be able to park their car until 7:30 a.m. Register online or mail in the form with payment. Also consider sponsoring this event or signing on as a volunteer. A sponsorship is a great way for business owners who live in Snohomish to get their name out there. Volunteers will be needed to direct entry car traffic, count ballots, clean up the event area, and remove barricades. This could be a really fun way for students to earn community service hours.
