West Coast architects, particularly Cliff May, designed and built the first ranch style homes in the early 1930s. The ranch style began to spread across the U.S. after World War II. Because this style of home had simple designs, it was easy to build, keeping the cost of construction low.

A raised ranch is a two-story house with a finished basement. The home style is not a raised ranch just because it has two stories however. To be considered a true raised ranch the main living area is set above a flight of stairs. If the design isn't setup this way, it's split-level house.
