The Evergreen State Fairgrounds hosts many events year round that are of interest to those who call Monroe home. One upcoming event that is sure to be fun for the whole family is the Gold, Gem, and Mineral Show. Come on out on February 18 or 19 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to learn more about prospecting and shop for amazing gold, rocks, and gems. Take a look at prospecting equipment and learn how it works. Those in the industry can even do some shopping and learn what new equipment and techniques are out there. This would be a great place to bring the kids to open their eyes to how gold, rocks, and gems are extracted from the earth. They are also sure to be amazed at all of the shiny and beautiful pieces on display and for sale.
This show is put on by the Washington Prospectors Mining Association, which supports those interested in mining just as a weekend thing, part time, or as a bigger operation. Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in prospecting and monthly meetings are held in Redmond, Tacoma, Mount Vernon, and Brewster. Take advantage of workshops and a newsletter that outlines local mining activities as well as a library with a vast collection of books and videos about mining, prospecting, and metal detecting. Also have access to more than 1665 acres of Association claims that are open for mining throughout Washington, Oregon, and California. Who knows how much gold or how many gems or rocks you will be able to take back to your Monroe home.
